Getting started with InterformNG2

Getting started with InterformNG2

Welcome to InterformNG2. This page gets you from download to your first document in three steps - whether you are evaluating the software or you have already purchased it and want to get up and running. The steps use a Windows install as the example. If you run IBM i or Linux, see the links at the bottom.

You do not need any prior InterformNG2 knowledge to follow these steps. Only basic Windows knowledge is needed.

InterformNG2 is our Output Management platform. It transforms XML files - and, on IBM i, spooled files - into PDF or print, adding your design (graphics, fonts, frames, lines and more) along the way. It is a Java application, so it runs on Windows, IBM i and Linux.

Before you start

  • A Windows PC or server to install on.
  • Around 15 minutes.
  • Your licence key or file, if you already received one from Interform or your partner. No licence yet? Step 2 covers that too.
  • Internet access on that machine makes licensing easiest. If the machine has no internet access, you can still license it offline - see step 2.

Full hardware, Java and browser requirements are listed under Prerequisites.

Step 1 - Download and install

  1. Log in to the Help Center and download the latest version of InterformNG2 for Windows.
  2. Unzip the downloaded file on the PC or server where you want to run the software.
  3. Run the installer and follow the screens. The suggested paths and the default port (8086) work for most installs, so you can accept the defaults if you are unsure.
  4. Start the InterformNG2 service when the installer finishes.

Open InterformNG2 in your browser at http://127.0.0.1:8086 (or https://127.0.0.1:8086 if you chose HTTPS during install).

Sign in for the first time with user admin and password password.

Important: You will be asked to set a new password on first sign-in. Please change it before connecting InterformNG2 to any network - the default password is for first sign-in only.

More detail: Installing InterformNG2 on Windows, Start and stop the InterformNG2 service and Sign on to InterformNG2.

Step 2 - Add your licence

InterformNG2 will not run without a licence. To open the licence screen, sign in as the system administrator (admin), select Admin on the top ribbon, then Licensing.

Pick the path that matches you:

A. You already have a licence key or file

From Interform or your partner:

  • Licence key: open the Online License Key tab, paste the key and press Get license. This needs internet access to the Interform licence server.
  • Licence file: open the License File tab, click Choose file, select your file and click Upload license File. This works without internet access.

Step-by-step: Activate the license code.

B. You do not have a licence yet, and want to evaluate

  • Click Request Test License, fill in your contact details and press Send Request. If the machine can reach the Interform licence server, a 7-day trial with all features enabled downloads and installs automatically.

C. You do not have a licence and the machine has no internet access

  • Copy the system information from the licence screen (as text, never as an image) and send it to us. We return a licence file you install via the License File tab. The steps, including the offline QR-code option, are in The Licence Code.

Not sure which licence you have or who to ask? Contact your partner or reach us at support@interformsoftware.com. Full detail on keys, files, online and offline options: The Licence Code.

Step 3 - Start having fun

You are in. To build your first document you work with four areas:

  • Designer - build your template. Add your logo, fonts and layout, and merge it with a sample file to see the result.
  • Library - upload the resources your templates use: images, fonts, sample documents, styles, mail templates and more.
  • Workflow - set up how input is received, which template is applied and where the result goes: PDF, print, email or archive.
  • Dashboard - your home screen, with links to every function and a live view of processed jobs.

Quick tip: templates reference data from your input file using XPath. A short, example-led introduction is here: XPath.

Once you are up and running, these articles cover the rest of a solid setup:

Running on IBM i or Linux?

The licence and first sign-in steps above are the same on every platform. Only the install differs:

Upgrading an existing installation?

If you already run InterformNG2 and want to move to a newer version, start here:

Before you upgrade: always back up your installation - especially your resources - so you can roll back if needed.
